Winner to be decided by a 50/50 community-wide and judging panel vote.

EDMONTON, AB – Today, Friday, June 21st, ten artists from across the Alberta Capital Region will showcase their talent on stage at Visionary’s Summer Fest, in front of a panel of industry professionals, as part of the My United Way Voice contest, proudly presented by Bayshore Home Health.

The top ten contestants were chosen from over 50 entries, with the winner to be selected by a 50/50 public and judging panel vote.

“We were blown away by the responses we received from our community this year and the willingness of singers, rappers and artists to use their style and genre on the topic of poverty,” stated R.J. Cui, CEO of PlanIt Sound.  “Not only has this contest come back – the talent has seriously amped it up! It will be exciting to see them perform live in front of their friends, families and Visionary guests.”

The contest, which is in its fourth season, launched in partnership with United Way, PlanIt Sound and KiSS 91.7 FM, invites singers, rappers and spoken word artists in the Capital Region to submit a song and video about poverty.  Some speak to the challenges of life in poverty, and others create a rallying cry to inspire others to make a difference.

“It’s great to be able to give the top ten contestants an opportunity to share their voice with everyone here today,” said Jennifer Herrick, Director, Engagement Marketing at United Way. “But most importantly it’s the awareness that these artists are bringing about the struggles of people living in poverty that makes this contest unique.”

Voting for the contest began online Monday, June 3rd and closes prior to the showcase ending.  Once the voting closes, the top three artists will be announced. The grand prize winner will be announced tomorrow on stage at Soundtrack Music Festival, presented by Kinsmen Club of Edmonton, where they will perform their song, sharing the stage with Boyz II Men, Shaggy, Ludacris and more.

This winner will also receive a fully-sponsored prize package valued at $20,000, including:

  • $5,000 cash prize* from Bayshore Home Health
  • A $15,000 music video and professional production of their winning song from PlanIt Sound
  • $500 musical prize package from Innovations Music

* Cash prize must go towards items that will help enhance the artist’s career (i.e. music equipment, lessons or schooling, performance attire, etc.)
